Im interdisziplinaren Wissens- und Meinungsaustausch von Germanistik, Palaographie, Kodikologie, Kunstgeschichte, Musikgeschichte, Geschichte und Theologie wird in diesem Band das Phanomen des Schreibens im Mittelalter - besonders in Zisterzienserkloestern - facettenreich unter die Lupe genommen. Das Schaffen zisterziensischer Skriptorien des deutschen Sprachraums, insbesondere in dessen Sudosten, vom 12. bis zum 16. Jahrhundert wird ausgelotet und unter wechselnden Blickwinkeln als Paradigma mittelalterlichen Schoepfergeistes und Kulturschaffens bewertet. Das Reiner Skriptorium dient dabei immer wieder als Rahmen oder Kontrastfolie. So werden differenzierte Blicke auf das Zisterziensische Schreiben generell gewonnen sowie auf die vielfaltigen Wechselwirkungen, die zwischen der Zisterze Rein - als dem altesten durchgehend bestehenden Kloster dieses Ordens - und der steirischen, oesterreichischen und europaischen Kulturlandschaft bestanden und bestehen.
